For a shoulder mount of a mammal do not cut open the chest cavity when field dressing the animal. If blood gets onto the hide that is to be mounted wash it off with water or snow as soon as possible. Also, avoid dragging the animal out of the woods if possible to eliminate damage from a rope, rocks, and broken branches that can puncture the hide.
